Building Wire Size Guide: What 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6 and 10 mm² Actually Mean

A practical guide to nominal conductor area, BV and BVR construction, and the size details building-wire buyers should confirm before RFQ.

Building-wire buyers often start with a number such as 1.5 mm², 2.5 mm², 4 mm², 6 mm² or 10 mm². That number is important, but it is not a complete cable specification.

The nominal size describes the conductor cross-sectional area. It does not, by itself, tell the buyer whether the conductor is solid, rigid stranded or flexible stranded, what standard applies, what the finished wire diameter will be, or what current the wire may carry in a specific installation.

For international procurement, the useful question is therefore not only “What size wire do I need?” but also “What construction and standard does the project require at that size?”

What Does 1.5, 2.5 or 4 mm² Mean on Building Wire?

mm² means square millimetres and is used to describe the nominal cross-sectional area of the conductor.

A 2.5 mm² wire does not mean that the copper conductor is 2.5 mm in diameter.

The same nominal cross-sectional area may be produced with different conductor constructions. A rigid-conductor building wire may use one solid conductor or several larger strands, while a flexible conductor uses more, smaller strands.

Same 2.5 mm² Size, Different Conductor Construction

BV — rigid, solid

2.5 mm²

1 × 1.78 mm
BV — rigid, stranded

2.5 mm²

7 × 0.68 mm
BVR — flexible, stranded

2.5 mm²

19 × 0.41 mm

All three examples refer to the same nominal cross-sectional area category, but the strand construction is different. This is why a buyer should not identify a building wire by size alone. See the BV vs BVR building wire comparison for the full conductor-construction distinction.

These are representative construction references for product identification. Final construction, dimensions and applicable standard requirements are confirmed against the applicable specification before quotation.

Does a Larger mm² Number Always Mean Higher Current Capacity?

For conductors of the same material at the same temperature, resistance per unit length generally decreases as conductor cross-sectional area increases. However, a project's allowable current cannot be selected from nominal conductor area alone.

The required current-carrying capacity must be checked against the applicable standard and installation conditions, including:

  • Conductor construction
  • Insulation system and temperature rating
  • Installation method
  • Conduit or enclosure conditions
  • Grouping with other circuits
  • Ambient conditions
  • Local electrical code
  • Project design requirements

BV or BVR: Does the Same Size Mean the Same Product?

No. BV and BVR can share the same nominal conductor area, but they represent different conductor-construction families.

BV

  • Rigid conductor
  • May be solid or stranded rigid depending on confirmed construction
  • Intended for applicable fixed-wiring arrangements

Review the BV building wire page.

BVR

  • Flexible stranded copper conductor
  • Easier bending and routing where the project specification permits this construction
  • Published Huanyu reference range: 2.5–70 mm²

Review the BVR flexible building wire page.

Neither designation should be treated as automatically equivalent to an IEC, EN, BS or H07V designation. The exact standard and product construction must be reviewed.

Why Finished Wire Diameter Is Not the Same as Nominal Conductor Size

Nominal conductor section and finished wire diameter are different measurements. The finished outside diameter depends on the confirmed conductor construction and insulation dimensions. Two wires with the same nominal conductor area can therefore have different physical dimensions.

For buyers, this matters when the project has:

  • Conduit or raceway space limits
  • Terminal or gland constraints
  • Panel wiring space requirements
  • Packing or coil requirements
  • Dimensional inspection criteria

The supplier should confirm finished dimensions against the applicable product specification before quotation or production.

How to Write Building-Wire Size in an RFQ

Single-core wire

  • BV, 1 × 2.5 mm², 450/750V
  • BVR, 1 × 6 mm², 450/750V

These examples show RFQ formatting only. The applicable standard, conductor construction and project requirements still need to be confirmed.

Flat two-core building cable

  • BVVB, 2 × 1.5 mm²
  • BVVB, 2 × 2.5 mm²
  • BVVB, 2 × 4 mm²

In a multicore or flat two-core construction, the first number identifies the number of insulated conductors and the second identifies the nominal conductor area of each core.

See Huanyu Cable's Building Wires & House Wiring Cables range for related product options before preparing the RFQ.

mm² vs AWG: Do Not Convert the Purchase Specification by Size Alone

Some markets specify conductor size in AWG rather than square millimetres. A rounded cross-sectional-area comparison may help initial discussion, but it should not be used to declare two finished wire products automatically equivalent.

Before substituting an AWG-designated product with a metric building wire, confirm:

  • Applicable product standard
  • Conductor class / construction
  • Nominal conductor requirement
  • Resistance limits
  • Insulation requirement
  • Rated voltage
  • Dimensions
  • Required tests and documentation

Do not replace an AWG designation with a rounded mm² value without checking the applicable standard and required conductor construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 2.5 mm² mean on electrical wire?

It identifies the nominal cross-sectional area of the conductor. It does not mean the conductor is 2.5 mm in diameter and does not, by itself, define strand construction, finished wire diameter or allowable current in a specific installation.

Is 2.5 mm² wire always the same construction?

No. A 2.5 mm² conductor can use different strand constructions depending on the product family and applicable specification. Huanyu's reference examples include rigid solid, rigid stranded and flexible stranded constructions.

Can I choose house wire only by mm² size?

No. The required standard, rated voltage, conductor construction, installation method, resistance and dimensional requirements should also be confirmed.

What is the difference between BV and BVR at the same mm² size?

BV is a rigid-conductor building-wire family, while BVR uses a flexible stranded conductor. The same nominal area therefore does not make the two products identical.

Does Huanyu supply building wire above 10 mm²?

Huanyu lists BV sizes above 10 mm², with additional listed sizes up to 300 mm², subject to confirmed construction and specification. Published BVR technical reference data covers 2.5–70 mm². Final availability is confirmed against the RFQ.

Can I send an AWG requirement instead of mm²?

Yes, but the exact product should be reviewed against the applicable standard and conductor construction. Do not assume a rounded AWG-to-mm² area conversion proves product equivalence.

Have a Building-Wire Size List or BOQ?

Send the required wire size, product designation, standard, voltage, colour, coil length, quantity and destination. Huanyu Cable can review the requested construction and documentation requirements before quotation.
